There are a lot of first. First steps. First birthday. First girlfriend. Plenty of first dates. Too many first days of school. But this is a new first that you have yet to experience. This is your first year of college, just like this is my first blog. This blog is not going to drag on about first, but rather keeping it fresh, like Will Smith (my favorite tv show of all time). Keeping it fresh does not come naturally. Keeping it fresh mean playing it cool and being flexible and open to pretty much anything. As a freshmen, there are so many things out in the college world trying to grab your attention and suck you into a commitment. Yes it is important to commit to things, at the same time, by keeping your plans open, many other doors open along the way. Being spontaneous is a big way of keeping it fresh. Go out and play Frisbee golf with a glow-in-the-dark disc at midnight, or play campus golf( golf with a tennis ball), or set up a game of capture the flag. People believe that in order to have fun you have to spend money, but those are all inexpensive ideas that never get old. At the same time, keeping it fresh consist of trying new things. Maybe you have never asked a girl on a date. Going on a date does NOT mean you are committing to someone, it is just getting to know someone better. And if it turns out that you don't feel a connection then be honest, be a man, and tell her the truth. Just be yourself and dress nice. If you look like a bum, she will think you are a bum. If you dress up nice and look fresh you many have a girlfriend by the end of the night. All in all, be chill, be flexible, and don't think you are too cool for anything.
I know this has been all over the place kinda like the opening chapel speaker, but read what I have to say here if you read anything at all. Growing in your faith and finding YOUR faith is a hard thing to do. It is not something to be done alone. Find and grow close to a good group of friends and build each other up. "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17)." If you do or don't believe in God, know that we, RA's, are here for you anytime day or night.
